The Rev. Charles Wilson will speak on “The Privatization of Public Schools” at the Tuesday, May 23, 2017, meeting of the Triad Chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State.  The meeting will be held from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at the Polo Recreation Center (1850 Polo Road) in Winston-Salem.  The public is cordially invited to join the conversation.

Our public-school system is being privatized, not just here in North Carolina, but nationally. The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has been a driving force in this campaign, which has found strong support in the Trump administration with the appointment of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education and Trump's own promise to provide 20 billion dollars for a national voucher program. The primary issue for Americans United is the use of public funds to support private religious schools and the impact this would have on the church-state relationship in the United States.

Charlie Wilson, the Chapter President, is a retired Baptist minister who worked 35 years with the Department of Pastoral Care of the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.  A graduate of Wake Forest University and Southeastern Theological Seminary, Rev. Wilson was a NC certified Pastoral Counselor and NC licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.  He is married to Anne Griffis Wilson, local political activist and has two adult sons, John and Thomas.  His hobby and primary form of personal therapy is time spent at his cabin in the wilds of Yancey County.
